Earthkeepers Training Camp

The Regent’s Yr 5 camp is a four-day environmental program of discovery called Earthkeepers.

Earthkeepers is an internationally acclaimed program developed by The Institute for Earth Education. This carefully crafted program is delivered to students all around the world by trained facilitators. Luckily for the River School, the Earthkeepers program is offered at the breathtakingly beautiful ‘Wild Mountains’ centre, located high in the World Heritage Rainforest south of Brisbane, near Rathdowney. Our students are accommodated in A-frame ‘tent-like’ cabins overlooking the mountains of the Scenic Rim. This ‘camp’ is more like an ‘intensive’ learning adventure, than a relaxing ‘time out.’ It is an action packed camp, filled high quality and with fun hands-on learning experiences out in nature.

Earthkeepers was developed for upper primary students with the goal of increasing their knowledge about four ecological concepts (energy flow, cycling, interrelationships, and change), and of deepening their feelings for the Earth through activities that deal with observation, discovery, solitude, and immersion in the natural world.

The program begins when a map and letter of invitation arrive at school inviting students to become Earthkeepers. Two weeks after this, the students travel to Wild Mountains for 4 days and 3 nights, to begin their training! As the students complete various stages of their Earthkeeper learning, they will receive 4 real keys (K.E.Y.S). These keys unlock specially made boxes, which hold top-secret information about how to become an Earthkeeper. During the 4 days at Wild Mountains, students earn their “K” key for Knowledge and their “E” key for Experience after participating in the activities.

Examples of activities include; Earthwalks through the forest to sharpen the senses, finding ‘magic spots’ in the ancient forest, digging up ‘time-capsules’ and sorting fossils, participating in the ‘Seasons’ play and quiz show, investigating soil, air and water ‘specs’ in the forest, finding sun, plant and animal ‘munchers’ in the rainforest…

Back at school, with the help teachers, classmates and families, students pledge to complete environmental tasks to earn their “Y” key (‘Yourself’= representing changes they will implement) and their “S” key for Sharing with others. These keys will open boxes to reveal the final 2 secrets of being an Earthkeeper! The infusion of challenge, mystery and anticipation of receiving special keys is so exciting for our Year 5 students. Engaging in fun, thought provoking and reflective activities that encourage Stewardship for the Earth is essential learning for our Year 5 River School students. Earthkeepers is a powerful experience for both learners and leaders. It is an experience that has a lasting influence on all who participate.

2018 River School Young Warrior video

I give so much credit to The River School for Dyllan and the beautiful being he has become over the years - even though he was pretty beauiful to begin with 🙂

I have always held the values of The River School close to my heart, I especially love that they teach the children yoga and meditation and that LOVE is always the starting point.
